LUISS is committed to facing the humanitarian crisis related to Mediterranean migration. Interested students can volunteer at the migrant reception center sponsored by the Italian Red Cross at Roma Tiburtina.
The center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Shifts are: 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m., and 12:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m. Volunteers are responsible for: distributing clothing and food, organizing supplies, entertaining children and adults, providing assistance during medical visits and clearing and organizing the center.
Volunteers can can sign up for shifts according to their availability. No specific experience is required as volunteers will meet with the head of the center at the beginning of each shift to coordinate responsibilities. Volunteers may refer to the head of the camp at any time during a shift.
Volunteers must wear long jeans (no skirts or shorts), athletic shoes and a long-sleeved top. It is prohibited to take videos or photos, as well as share images on social media.
It is important that volunteers honor their commitments, the Red Cross organizes its activities based on the number of volunteers available (maximum 10 per shift). It is therefore necessary to make careful consideration before signing up; while it is a great experience, it can also be emotionally intense and touching.
